Pau Hana Painters Collective

The Pau Hana Painters was founded out of a passion for collaboration, community, and sharing creativity with the public.

In today’s ever-changing climate, artists have continued to quietly create masterpieces behind closed doors, while sharing their work virtually with an ever-growing online community. The goal is to bring this online community of local artists to the public and show in real life that what we create has the potential to inspire and bring joy to the community in which we live and serve.

Kaela Kahiau is a Native Hawaiian artist whose primary medium is paint. She began on her path as an artist with digital photography but craved to create her own worlds through more tangible mediums. She began painting to move emotions and create unique scenes and fell in love with the limitlessness of painting.

Kaela’s art has evolved with her. She uses her work as a means of emotional release as well as to create pieces that highlight moments of growth and transition, moving paint as she moves through her emotions creating pieces that inspire others to do the same. Kaela’s surreal works are inspired by the worlds that exist externally and internally within each of us, as well as the natural world.

After receiving my Bachelor of Studio Art from the University of Hawaii at Mānoa in 2018, I decided to make the dive into Art full-time. Over the years, I experimented with mediums and taught myself advanced drawing techniques in order to visually represent my concepts. As my self-awareness grew, my work became more comprehensive & my concepts began to find its reasoning. In 2019, I became the featured Artist of Mental Health America of Hawaii. Which in turn, allowed me to advocate for the de-stigmatization of Mental Health amongst young, Asian-American males. The core values behind my work lay in 1) emotional representation through mediums/techniques, 2) advocating/showcasing emotional equity through representation, and 3) storytelling/private journaling through language. The spectrum of letters is much like the spectrum of emotions. And the question will always be “how willing are you to read between the lines?”

I am an Oahu-based Italian American artist. I have been drawing and painting since I can remember. As a young adult, I received formal art training, attending undergraduate and graduate programs. My source of inspiration is deeply intertwined with my personal experiences. My images tend to focus on people in my life, moments of feeling close to the world. Mythology, spirituality, and sometimes social commentary are typically the subject matters. I see art and beauty in everyday processes and things. Washing hands, breathing, porch light on at night, humble and beautiful. The process is as important as the product for me. I like to think of art as alchemy, using paint and tools to transform a subconscious image into a tangible object. A single painting cannot capture the whole of a person or feeling, but it might give us a little piece of them, and that is what motivates me to continue trying.
